| Saxmundham allegedly derives from
the Saxon "Seizmonds Home'. The earliest recorded mention of
Saxmundham is in the Domesday Survey of 1086 which mentions
three churches. It has had a Market charter since at least
1272AD and carries on the tradition to this day.
Saxmundham is at the centre of Suffolk's Heritage Coast
region and is perfectly located for visits to the many
attractions in the area. Saxmundham is also well served for
shops and banks, and the town has two caravan and camping
sites, as well as several excellent pubs, hotels, guest
houses and B&Bs.
Within a 15 minute drive of Saxmundham, there's
beautiful heritage coastline, several important nature
reserves & areas of outstanding natural beauty, many
historic sites, and the seaside resorts of
Felixstowe , Aldeburgh,
Southwold and Great Yarmouth.
In 2002, the
Sutton
Hoo ship burial site was opened by the National Trust
and already has become one of their top attractions in the
UK. The RSPB has its main visitor centre and bird reserve at
Minsmere near Saxmundham. |
